Child Counseling

Play Therapy

At Fireside Counseling, we provide counseling services to children starting at age 3. Play therapy is the most developmentally appropriate modality when working with young children. Most young children are not cognitively able to have in depth conversations about their struggles or feelings. Through the play therapy process, the toys are seen as the child’s words and their play is the language they use to communicate with the counselor. Through the warm and accepting relationship from the therapist, children can build confidence, social skills, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and learn to make better behavioral choices.

There are many counselors that will see children, but they do not have specialized training in this area. It requires advanced, specialized training, experience, and supervision, for a mental health professional to earn the Registered Play Therapist (RPT) credential. At Fireside Counseling, Terressa Harding has earned the RPT credential.

Activity Therapy

The playroom can still be a fun place for older children and pre-teens. Some older children also struggle to talk about the concerns they are having. Therapeutic games, activities, and creative arts and crafts help older children explore the areas that are troubling them in a way that feels safe and comfortable for them.
